Experiment 001

Made of truth

BACKSTORY

Beautiful Imperfection – two words not seen to be commonly associated with each other come together to form a new meaning – to reflect an unseen truth.

“You can’t be analytical and creative.” This is what I was told. If I was seen as one, it was impossible to be seen as the other. So it wouldn’t be possible for me to be a lawyer, artist and an athlete? I could choose to listen to what I was being told or what I heard and make my life easier on myself, or I could choose to listen to what I knew was true for me.

RULES

I must create using multiple mediums

TWO

Each medium selected must be a new experience

THREE

LIVE
COLLAGE

‘Beautiful Imperfection’ my expression of life. Life to me is only worthwhile if you’re alive and serving a purpose that is true to you – versus merely existing.

In life despite what is set before us – we are free to create what is fitting to us. A collage style format was used as it presents a fresh way of looking at the world. The term ‘live collage’ was created to classify the genre further as it felt more fitting.

Each of the items together, represent significant pieces of my life – my expression of what matters most.

Beautiful Imperfection, Live Collage, I AM SHIBUI

All items are personal - even the canvas that underpins the live collage is a part of my life – my workshop floor – painted purposely black. The darkness allows the items to be put into the light.

I have often laid on the floor, in times of excitement, disconnect or despair. It grounds me, it re-energizes me and it reminds me to always get back up.

The photograph was then shot from a different perspective, the large size and depth of many of the items is then lost, to remind us that sometimes our perspective distorts our ability in life to see things as they truly are. Linking back to the projects philosophy See Past What You Know™.

IDEA

To understand and share how the world sees ‘Beautiful Imperfection’, not just how I see it. This was an exploration of whether ‘Beautiful Imperfection’ means anything to others, and if it does, I wanted to understand what it means. This would help me see how people with different backgrounds, beliefs, values, and upbringinds view their life, the world and their ideas on what it means to be successful and happy.

PROCESS

Strangers were asked to write what(beautiful, imperfection, perfect, beautiful imperfection) means to them personally. In one word. When you’re limited to one word it forces you to distill everything down to the essence of what it truly means to you. Each word was revealed one at a time after each response.

Votes were in. Tickets booked. Materials and clothes packed. That night we were on a plane bound for New Zealand. We landed before the sun had woken up. The temperature was even too cold for snow. I drove for over six hours, stopping to create along the way. Our first time there. Everything we faced was met at that given moment. We started out at one place. We finished somewhere completely different.

DIDN’T
SEE

The things you don’t see are what allow the things you do to happen.

When we set out to do something important, filled with purpose, it means so much that at times we lose perpsective. As a result of the conditions of which we are living or from having a single focus of the outcome. We end up disconnected from life’s coordinates. Temporarily, we can lose who we are in the process. For better or for worse.

Often adventures and challenges are about the bonds with the people you experience it with – even over the outcome itself.

... we triumphed, we
struggled ... But
what I remember most
– is laughing for
majority of the
six hour drive back to the airport.

We started filled with the adrenallin of excitment, we learned, we improved, we even disagreed and fought, we struggled and we triumphed.

But what I remember most – is laughing for the majority of the six hour drive back to the airport.

We set out to show you ‘Beautiful Imperfection’ in life with materials not typically associated to each word. But in the process we showed our own ‘Beautiful Imperfection’ in ourselves.
