PROLOGUE

Before I shared See Past What You Know™ with the world I wanted to put it to the test, on myself.

Was I willing to question my own thought processes and open myself to believing an entirely different set of possibilities?

Under immense pressure of a personal endeavor – would I compromise any of my core values to complete this project? Would I continue to live See Past What You Know in all circumstances, no matter what? How would I act and react in all moments?

Welcome to Experiment 000

ARTS, I AM SHIBUI

Perception versus truth. Image versus reality. Reputation versus who you really are.

How our perception is formed is complex. There are many factors that play a role. It’s embedded deeply into how we see things.

Whether this is ourselves, others or the world around us. Some we are conscious of others we are not.

Based on my own experiences and observations I became particulary interested in how perceptions are formed, how they determine the way we see and how the way we see shapes how we behave.

I began to realize if I wanted to change a situation, I first had to change myself.

ONE

Philosophy teachers will provide me with weekly practices that I will complete.

TWO

I will apply these to my life actively and in the moment.

THREE

I will observe, monitor and document.

FOUR

This Experiment will run until the I AM SHIBUI project is launched publicly.

HIGHS
AND
LOWS

Our shoes carry us – from one moment to the next. Whether we're experiencing a high or a low. It's what connects us to the worlds surface.

As part of living this experiment, I not only walked around in my own shoes in ways I hadn't previously. I was required to step inside the shoes of others – people I know well – people I interact with and people I had never previously met.

Here's a preview of some of the stories, moments, emotions and revelations experienced while living See Past What You Know. In my sneakers, other people's sneakers and the world.

To gain a deeper understanding of my own perceptions, experiences, challenges, thought processes and feelings – and those of others.

DAY 0

WHO I AM. I had to start somewhere. I stripped everything back and only included what was the unchanging as I saw it. I know what I am not. That’s where I started.

DAY 0000

LOCATION

ONLY YOU KNOW WHAT IS INSIDE

Each of us have a responsibility to ourselves and to our talents to discover what this is. To the deepest degree.

When you See Past What You Know all that is left behind is the truth. The wearing away of layers it what causes a person’s true spirit to emerge. Your rough edges are smoothed. Your deeper talents surface. Your nature is revealed. Your true purpose in life becomes clearer.

There is a lot of erosion involved in evolution. And I’ve been experiencing this throughout this experiment so far.

Without a strong sense of self – without even realizing, sometimes what is not true for us will seep in and meddle with what we know to be true.

We owe it to ourselves and we owe it to the world to always go back to the truth of what lays within us. It will help us with our own personal fulfillment. And the world needs more of us being the best we can be, like only we know how to be. And this is where it begins.

PERSPECTIVE

You are not what you do.

It was so ingrained in me. Such a part of me. I don’t know where I ended and it began. I was one with sport. It was one with me. There was no separation or distinction between it and me.

DAY 00000

Location

You are not your passion.

BACKGROUND

I was never seen as an artist nor saw myself as one. I was an athlete. I never considered that I could be anything else. The arts were presented in a way that I didn’t naturally identify to myself. But I always enjoyed creating. This was part of my nature. There was something I was drawn to - it was the process of taking raw materials and building something that didn’t previously exist, with my own two hands.

So I found myself always making. Whether this was with clay, wood, metals, fabric, paper - it didn’t matter - it wasn’t the medium I was connected to - it was the process of making. I never kept anything I made, I would always give it to someone else. As I put more of myself into what I made - I reserved it for those I cared about most. I viewed it as the thing I did to give to others. So sport was something I did for myself and the arts was something I did to give to others.

FINAL DAY

Through my process of this experiment, what I discovered was that See Past What You KnowTM was most absent and difficult to achieve when it came to how I see myself. To my shock, the impact of this had shifted the course of my own life.

REPUTATION

When reputation is built on the opposite of truth.

When someone presents themselves one way and you discover it may not necessarily be the truth – it can make you start to question the foundation of everything you once knew to be true. Then when another situation presents itself with someone entirely new and it has the reminescence of a previous experience – how do you act? Do you protect yourself from the situation?

I was faced with these questions serveral times during this experiment. Today’s experience stood out in my mind. It came from someone with a strong public reputation. It made me think of how large groups of outside admiration protect indivdiuals. It presents them with an even stronger image that does not match their true nature. How often do we stop and wonder how much we truly know about a person? What is the basis of our admiration?

Success at the expense of others is not true success at all.

DAY 0000

WHEN
THE
UNBREAKABLE
BREAKS

We were a dynamic duo. Our bond was solid. Plenty of banter. We made fun of ourselves and each other, all for a laugh, which we spent plenty of time doing. We chatted about everything – from silly to serious and placed all that was spoken safely in the vault.

Brutally honest, with plenty of love and respect. We weren’t friends from childhood but we knew one thing for sure – that our bond would last until the end of our days. To the shock of us both - it didn’t.

When something you feel you know for sure is no longer for sure, what happens?

DAY 3076

EMERGE

“I never let a player play injured. Ever.” His voice made it clear there were no exceptions to this rule. I looked him straight in the eyes and wondered how he knew. How could he possibly know. I felt the emotion rise up, instinctively the athlete in me tried not to give too much away – my eyes stayed dry. But there was no need to have my guard up – Coach could see me for who I was. He understood. He felt my hurt. (I felt a bond. And a sense of relief because I didn’t need to explain). He understood.

CHANGE

Real change does not take place externally.

When something appears different, expresses itself differently outwardly, but ultimately is made of the same colors, is the same brand. Has it really changed?

FINAL DAY

REAR
VIEW

Some of the most significant moments occur without you realizing at the time.

I never really considered this before living this experiment.I’ve realized that as much as I’ve developed further on an individual level and as much as this experiment has demanded from me. It’s always the moments, both highs and lows shared with others that I remember most. Whether it’s laughter from the trenches or getting others involved and inviting them to share memorable experiences.

DAY 2067

New York

PERSPECTIVE

Up against it, aware of time, I could hear my watch ticking. The noise was broken with a different sound. A young boy’s voice “Lady, lady ... “ the rest was mumbled in the distance. I kept walking, but I could hear the sounds of the footsteps getting louder and faster as they neared. He was running. Quickly.

”Lady, lady, you been shot?!” I stopped and turned around. He was talking to me. His face displayed genuine concern. For me? A complete stranger. It was only when I was made to stop did I start to feel like I was going to pass out. As my head drifted down I couldn’t help to notice his gold sneakers – cool kicks. I did feel wounded. But had I been shot?

DAY 2067

New York

WE’RE ALL
STRANGERS ONCE.
UNTIL WE’RE NOT.

There he was, on a Saturday afternoon, in a full tailored 3-piece suit. I felt two things immediatately – that there was something more to his choice of clothing. And I, along with everyone else in the cafe – suddenly felt underdressed. I later asked him about his choice of clothing.

He was just literally someone I saw a few days earlier crossing a busy street, in a city of millions.

There was something about his spirit. As I heard more I realized, this seemingly chance encounter was so fitting to this project. I felt compelled to share his story with the world.

His name was Rasuel.

DAY 0000

New York

REFLECTION

Two strangers, living decades apart, in different parts of the world, kept a piece of paper with the exact same poem on it and read it as each year passed. A chance encounter leads them to meet on the 27th day - an already significant day for one. It's realized they have more in common than just that piece of paper. I was one of those individuals – the other was Coach Bank.

Florida

Written in the car somewhere between Miami and Bradenton. Exact location unknown.

UNITED
DIVIDED

We all breathe the same air. Yet, no two humans are the same. It’s in this difference that we’re uniquely ourselves. And with this, we are of most value to each other.

Instead of appreciating the beauty of this – I noticed that this difference is the exact same thing we fight about when there is a conflict.

This process can only be achieved through opening your mind and allowing your perception to shift. The ability to see the world through the eyes of others.

NEW YORK

PEACE
DISTURBED

I jump on the subway and manage to grab a seat. I was happy and excited, but feeling a bit overworked – physically and mentally tired, I decide to rest my eyes. While my eyes are closed I take the time to clear my head, focus in and freshen up using one of the philosophy based exercises from this experiment. The idea being to replace the tired I was feeling with a more fresh energized feeling before I headed off to this important meeting – a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I was feeling it start to work when suddenly I felt a warm substance on my skin, what was that? Someone spilt their coffee on me? Then more.

The rest was immediate – my eyes shot open, I jumped up, as I very quickly started piecing together what was happening and what had happened. I immediately went from a peaceful, focused in, energized place to disgust and anger.

FINAL DAY

MARKS
MADE

Here’s a mark for every stranger who left a memorable mark on me during this experiment.

Month 00, 2018

FINAL DAY

REAR
VIEW

In the process of trying to observe my perception of the world I discovered there’s more right in different ways than I imagined. With what is presented to us it’s easy to have a view of the world that’s filled with concern and a lack of hope for our future.

In many cases this is validated. There is truth in the concerns, there are a lot of things we can improve – things that are not hard to improve but the addition of all those small things will make a big difference. And there are some things that are simply unacceptable that must change. But when things remain unseen it’s impossible to change.

Ultimately, as humans we’re hardwired for connection and compassion moreso than anything else. And while this holds true – there’s still hope.
